Wedding Cake Holders

Whichever wedding cake you decide upon will ultimately be a matter of personal taste, and so it will be with the wedding cake stand.

However, the wedding cake holder will be in direct relation to type of cake you choose.

A traditional wedding cake is invariably a three-tiered showpiece adorned with roses and the usual wedding cake topper of a small bride and groom.

Much of that tradition has now begun to fade as the modern bride and groom look for greater originality and creativity. A modern wedding cake can often be rather minimal and the wedding cake toppers can range from the humorous to small works of expensive art.

Needless to say, as these changes have taken place the wedding cake holder has also undergone a major transformation. With that said, it has to be mentioned that even today there is still a place for the classic wedding cake holder such as antique class. These are still available and if the cake has a more traditional look about it then the wedding cake stand should complement it. You will also notice how the color of the cake and stand are also in harmony and the wedding cake toppers may give you some idea of how things are changing.

In the first image above, you can see three rather spectacular wedding cakes and their accompanying ceramic wedding cake holders. These were designed by Clara French who makes limited collections every year. As you can see, the cake and stand have a certain harmony that complement one and other perfectly.

I’m also going to give a little plug for Sandra’s Cakes. For now I’ll just pop an image in here and then put some more detailed information in later through the week.

OK, as promised I said I’d add a little bit more about Sandra’s cakes. I think she’s a very creative cake maker and although this post is exclusively about cake holders it’s still related in some way because she fully understands the harmonic nature that must exist between the cake and the cake holder.

If you can find the time then head over to her blog Here and take a look at her fabulous artistry.

I should also point you in the direction of Clara French who I mentioned earlier but forgot to post a link to her website. Here’s where you can peruse the beautiful handiwork of this very talented lady Clara French

OK, so I’ve introduced you to a couple of talented people but there’s still a whole lot more information that this post will cover over the coming weeks. In the meantime keep looking around at as many designs as you possibly find online and it will help you choose the exact product that you want for your big day.

I’ll be back in a few days. See you soon.

Costs Associated With Wedding Cakes

wedding cakes 14

There are many costs that are associated with your wedding cakes and you should be aware of these factors before you run out and start shopping for a cake, because you may be surprised how much some of these smaller things will change the price of your cake. As for a general pricing guideline, your concoction will likely cost right around $1000. You can go lower than that, getting a decent cake for four or five hundred dollars and you can certainly spend more – as much as $5000 for an extravagant cake from a bakery that is high in demand for the quality of cake that they provide.

One of the most common things that brides can add to their cake and rack up the cost without knowing it is the decorations. The plastic figurines, trellis’s, furniture and other decorations that look so pretty in the book and would be perfect for the cake may cost more than you think. Wedding Cake Toppers are a must for most brides, but many are surprised to learn that on average these figures costs around $50, which seems to be a high price to pay for these but is actually quite a bit lower than the beautiful trellis’s and more complex decorations that you may be considering.

Cream fillings, nuts or fruit toppings or turning your cake into a cheese cake may add as much as a dollar per slice, or several hundred more dollars to your cake. You’ll want to consider carefully some of these extras that you are planning to do with your cake if you are trying to save money. Another cost that many don’t think about is the delivery cost which can be $50 to $75 for the bakery assistant to deliver and set up your cake. If your cake is complex and requires assembly you may not have a choice however. Also, most bakeries charge to cut wedding cakes, and this may come to another few hundred dollars as it averages around $1 a slice.

If you want to have a beautiful cake without spending thousands of dollars there are a couple of things that you can do to save money. One thing that is done at many events to to have a partially faux cake. For instance, the top layer of the cake will be real, but the rest of the layers of the cake are made of styrofoam or cardboard with the icing spread over them and decorated. Then you can bring out slices of a sheet cake to pass out to guests. Hopefully, if you are trying to find ways to save money on wedding cakes, you’ll be able to create a cost effective solution without compromising the quality of your nuptials.

Wedding Cake Cost

If you have an upcoming nuptial then you’re likely wondering what the perfect cake might cost.

Luckily there are a few guidelines that you can follow when pricing wedding cakes. First, is the very cheap one. This can be had for around $2 a slice. This type of confection is single layered or two layered at the most, and will cost approximately $500. This generally includes both the decorative part and an extra sheet cake for feeding guests.

A more mid-range priced cake, and probably the most common type of choice is around $5 a slice and will include several tiers of a fancily decorated cake. You can choose from flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, lemon or carrot cake. This will also usually include fancier icing, and may or may not include the toppers or other accessories that go with wedding cakes. This type of cake will generally run you around a $1000 or perhaps a bit more. This may seem like a lot to pay for a cake, but sometimes an entire day’s work or possibly two goes into creating the perfect cake and may take several workers including bakers and decorators.

Luxury Wedding Cakes

If you want to go all out and get the most expensive kind of cake to make your event memorable the highest priced wedding cakes tend to be around $10-12 dollars a slice. This will be an extremely elaborate deal that is exactly what you want and will included specialized icing such as fondant as well as countless other possibilities for sugary decorations. Generally this cake can be priced between $2000 and $3000 and is sure to be the focal point of your celebration. These types of wedding cakes will come in any flavor or icing type that you want in most cases.

If you are in the market for a cake then there are some things to keep in mind. First, you should schedule a tasting session with some of the local bakeries in your area. This will allow you to pick the taste you like best, as well as get a chance to look at some of the styles and prices. Some bakeries charge a small fee (around $10) for a tasting session, and some will charge nothing. However, don’t leave your cake to the last minute as some bakeries, especially the good ones will require several weeks and sometimes several months notice in advance.

Of course buying your wedding cake is only one aspect of the total cost of your wedding, there will be many other things to consider.

However, one of the beneficial factors of a modern wedding is that the cost can be estimated quite accurately. Remember, once you have established your budget – stick to it.

The History of Wedding Cakes

wedding cakes 5

They may come in lavish chocolate and be beautifully sculpted, but where exactly does the tradition of wedding cakes come from? Well, the tradition was started by the Romans even before our modern decorating styles. In fact, one of the early traditions of the marital cake was to break it over the bride’s head. Remember that next time that your icing didn’t come out just right, or the cake gets shifted on the way to the wedding. If you had been born a few hundred years earlier you could have been wearing your confection, rather than eating it.

Another tradition in the middle ages involved stacking sweet buns in front of the bride and groom and them attempting to kiss over top the pile. If they were able to do so, it meant that fortune would smile upon them with many children. In the 17th century, wedding cakes were temporarily replaced by what was known as the Bride’s Pie. This pie had a special ingredient baked in, a glass ring, that mimicked our current bouquet traditions, informing the lady who found the glass ring in their piece of pie that they would be next to be married. This was by no means universally true, but bride’s pies were quite popular.

Another interesting tradition was that of sleeping with a piece of cake underneath one’s pillow, in order to create good fortune for a future spouse. This tradition saw brides put cake crumbs through their nuptial rings and into the waiting hands of their guests – who would then take them home and put it under their pillow. It was the latter part of the nineteenth century that wedding cakes became extremely popular at weddings, although at first just single layer treats. Another tradition that was early American was the grooms cake which were a dark concoction for the groom. However, this tradition is rarely practiced now.

By popular demand wedding cakes are for the most part white and have been for quite a while. This color of course is a symbol of purity and even though today bride’s may not stick to this tradition every time, as they often color coordinate the cake and other items with the dress color, white is still very popular in our modern culture. The history of this cake is a fascinating and interesting one, with traditions that have died and new traditions that have popped up. Next time that you are planning an event consider some of the older traditions that are rarely practiced, it may be fun. Of course dumping it over the bride’s head may not be one of those that we want to come back.

Wedding Cake Toppers

Topper 1

Choosing Wedding Cake Toppers is one of the most fun things that you can do, and there are many different types of toppers to choose from. Of course, many times the topper depends upon what kind of cake that you are ordering, but if you haven’t yet ordered it and you need some ideas we’ll go over all the different kinds of toppers for wedding cakes that are available. These come in many different shapes and sizes but you are sure to find one that no only fits your confection’s style, but also fits your own personal style.

The first kind of topper for wedding cakes that we’ll go over is the traditional one. This is a favorite among many couples who prefer a more traditional celebration. These can include anything from figurines of the bride and groom, in various poses and most often in gowns and tuxedos, to hands bearing rings, or clasped as a symbol of marriage. Sometimes these figurines can be childlike, or often they are porcelain or glass are are featureless but most often the traditional figurine pieces will be lifelike representations of the bride and groom including race and hair color.

Another popular type of cake topper is the humorous one. Some of these feature funny scenes such as the groom trying to help the bride climb the cake and others are humorous representations of marriage such as the bride trying to grab the groom’s collar while the groom is obviously running away. Still others that adorn the top of wedding cakes include references to a woman’s penchant for shopping, or feature the bride in a victorious stance as if the marriage or groom was the prize in a contest. There are many different humorous cake toppers and you are sure to find one that appeals to your particular sense of humor. Be aware however, that your mother-in-law may not find it equally as funny.

Of course if you are engaging in the celebration of a theme or if you are wanting to accent a particular trait or occupation, they have toppers for that as well. If the bride or the groom is a musician for instance, then you may want to have a topper that shows a figurine playing the sort of instrument they play. If your bride and groom are adventurous then a topper showing mountain climbers or skydivers may be in order. Plus, since wedding cakes can be customized, this is a perfect way to set up the cake as well, either a skydiving platform or mountain. There are many toppers to choose from, so take your time and find the perfect one.
